There’s an app for that

It’s no secret that I am on a journey to remove as many chemicals in our home.  This is the space I control what we breathe in, what we use, and what we eat.  Throughout this journey I have read numerous books, articles, and blogs to help me create a healthier lifestyle.  I welcomed this healthier lifestyle with open arms.  While looking for tools and resources to help me make the best decision on what products I should keep and which ones should go I came across a couple I now wouldn’t want to be without.  Of course there would be an app to help me make healthier choices.  There’s an app for everything else why wouldn’t there be an app to help individuals live a cleaner life?  Think Dirty & EWG app and website have changed my life.

Once I found this app, I was questioning why I didn’t download the Think Dirty app sooner?  Have you heard about this app?  It is a user friendly app that educates you on the potentially toxic ingredients in your personal care and cosmetic products.  Think bathroom items.  All you have to do is scan the bar code and wait for the ranking on the product.  It is easy to read and understand.  Best part, it gives you healthier options if the product is ranked higher than you would like.

I like to keep all my products in the green zone.  The green zone is a ranking of 1-3.  After I downloaded the app I started scanning the products I use on a daily basis.  I was bummed to see a couple of my favorite Lush products that I thought were healthier options were in red.  I was told they were all natural and safer than other products I was using.  Boy did I learn my lesson.  I will scan any product or look it up before I buy it.  No need to waste money and expose my husband and I to harmful chemicals when I am trying to remove them for our home.

This app has widen my DIY essential oil projects.  I wouldn’t consider myself a true DIY person.  I keep it to simple low key recipes.  It has helped build my confidence that I am capable of creating useful and healthier options.  I now have a list of items I would like to make using my essential oils including making replacements for the two Lush products that I loved.  I have been able to share my passion of safe and healthier items by making homemade items for family and friends.  A few years ago I never thought I would be doing this let alone capable of making something I am proud of that is chemical free.

Another app and website I visit often for their useful information is EWG.  I could spend the entire day reading articles and educating myself further on living a healthier life.  Environmental Working Group (EWG) covers more than bathroom products.  It is full of useful information from food, products, energy, children’s health, and more.  The data base of items ranked is impressive.  It’s the largest I have found on a ranking system providing useful information on why they gave a particular item a certain number.  I search this website all the time. If you haven’t gone to this website make sure you check it out.  You will learn a lot in a small amount of time.

You may be surprised to hear that laundry detergent, all purpose cleaner, dishwashing detergent, oven cleaners, antibacterial cleaner, window and glass cleaner, toilet bowl cleaners, and air fresheners are some of the potentially dangerous chemicals to be found in a home.  Earlier I mentioned DIY products using essential oils.  Essential oils are perfect to create your own household cleaning products.  Instead of buying air freshener from the store I now make my own room freshener.  It’s comforting knowing what I am spraying in the room is safe to inhale. My laundry detergent says if swallowed drink plenty of water instead of calling poison control. How great is that?  Making little changes impacts your health more than you know.  You will notice a change on how you feel once you start removing these items from your home and replacing it with cleaner alternatives.

Creating a healthier home doesn’t stop with products we use.  It also covers the foods we eat.  I primarily shop at Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, and Target for groceries.  Eating clean (organic foods) has helped eliminate the chemicals we once were consuming.  In turn it has kept us healthier than ever.

I encourage you to download these apps and start scanning products in your home.  You may think replacing your chemical items with safer and healthier options will cost you more.  In reality it will actually cost you less and your health will benefit from it which is priceless.
